Not only does a cancer sufferer need to know all they can about their condition but so do their friends and families. Only accurate information will lead them to make informed decisions as to treatment, cures, and everyday living with cancer. They need to understand the process their body is going through and the reasons for it. This is all a part of dealing with cancer and helping people through it.
One positive aspect is that new information is being discovered all the time and we can expect to be much more informed in the future. We are certainly more informed than previously. Charity and government work have led to a much wider body of information now available to us. There is one-on-one support, with face-to-face personal interaction allowing sufferers to talk in confidence with a trained specialist. There is also plenty of written material made available for you to take away and read in the comfort of your own home.
It is understood however that it is not always practical for people to have to travel to meet someone; some people don't drive, live in an area with poor public transport or are immobile. To meet these needs, there are mobile cancer information centres that tour the country, specifically stopping off in places where there may not be an existing cancer center. These centres makes available free confidential information and support to those in their respective communities and generally appointments are not required. They are open to anyone dealing with cancer, whether that be a sufferer or are dealing with it in another way i.e. a friend or a family member. They are even there for people who are just concerned about cancer in general.
Some people of course prefer to get all the information they can whilst not having to leave their home to get it. There are numerous free phone lines available for both sufferers and their families. There are even those that target specific languages so even language is not a barrier.
For those who have access to the World Wide Web, there is a huge collection of information and support available. With socially interactive websites being huge at the moment and with the wave of interaction set to continue and grow, the capacity for support is massive. There are forums, chat rooms, message boards, blogs, newsgroups, mailing lists etc. where people can get involved in discussions or even just be a fly on the wall. There is the option to talk to other sufferers both giving and getting advice and get involved in a community who are going through the same experience as you are. There is of course a lot of information available on these sites for people to educate themselves.
With so many forms of information available, receiving help and support has never been easier. Whether you prefer to be educated at home, wither online or with telephone support or if you prefer face-to-face communication, no matter what the time of day, there will always be somebody to help.
Through this site, we aim to provide you with some information on the various types of cancer that can afflict both men and women. It's up to you to seek further advice if and when required.
